Testing with web ("http") servers that are not officially supported
Question:I recently got involved on an Intranet pilot and made my views clear that I would prefer to use HREF Tools WebHub plus O'Reilly WebSite as the http server. Anyway, the network people are keen on Novell so they went and bought the latest Novell Server - I don't even know the name, but first question - does WebHub support Novell ?
Answer:Generally, WebHub supports any http server that has an ISAPI and/or a cgi-bin interface. (Novell has cgi-bin by the way.) To find out for sure, install the http server software, then install WebHub Runtime.
Go through the normal preliminary tests (and note that specific links and hints for these tests are included in the HTML file which opens at the end of the runtime installation):
- make sure ?version works, and copy the server name exactly (it will be shown in the browser). Use that server name to make an appropriate entry in WHNetworkInfo.xml on your system, i.e. for a new http server software definition.
- call ?refresh to load your change in WHNetworkInfo.xml into the runner
- make sure ?echo works
- make sure ?hubvers:pgversion works
If you pass all tests, then your WebHub application will work.
If you think the runner is basically working but some small thing seems wrong, look in ZMAdmin under the Http Server definitions, and experiment with the settings until you find a combination which works. NB: if the ?refresh command is not working due to overall misconfiguration, you probably need to stop/start your http server software between each experiment.
